6 Things Great Leaders Refuse To Do
If you want your TEAM to accomplish GREAT things, you MUST first show them that you truly care!
No matter how much something is outside of their comfort zone, there are challenging tasks that leaders must do to make a small business expand, to make it prosper and to take it to the next level. Similarly, there are many things that a leader must not do, whether dealing with employees or customers or even themselves. To be a great leader, it’s important to know that there are limits to your authority and there are moral lines that you must never cross.
Let’s have a look at the behaviors and habits that a great leader will never adopt:
1. Making Excuses:
Take a page from the life of any great leader and see if you find a story where that leader was whining, complaining or making excuses. Let’s just say the word no or impossible doesn’t exist in their dictionary. Leaders have made countries emerge out of nothing; leaders have been able to establish millions worth of business out of an idea and leaders have done many great things – and are still doing, except one thing. They have never made useless excuses.
2. Breaking Deals:
It will be difficult to gain respect for leaders if they keep dishonoring their own words or don’t honor their commitments. If such a reputation spreads throughout the business industry, hardly anyone will be willing to do business, partner or form any association with such a leader. A notable leader is the one who always fulfills his promises and stays true to his words, regardless of the circumstances.
3. Not Valuing an Employee’s Time:
Leaders think that they are being cunning by inviting employees after office hours to enjoy a good meal together when it really is just a company meeting or is a means to make them stay after work hours to discuss a “plan”. While employees will faithfully abide by this request, there will be not so friendly feelings towards the leaders. A company or a business can never succeed when leaders do not have a favorable relation with the employees. So, no matter how important something is, do not devalue an employee’s personal time and learn to manage the existing time efficiently.
4. Don’t Ask Employees to Perform in a Way you Never Did:
Imagine a manager asking an employee to be punctual when he himself arrives late every other day. There will be no weight behind the words, no respect and definitely, no shame. Similarly, asking an employee to sit late to finish work when the manager himself never did the honors should be avoided. A great leader will never ask his subordinates to do something that he never did.
It is not just some habits that make leaders great but it is also their behavior that makes them so. Great leaders don’t slump, they don’t procrastinate and they never accept defeat. They know when the employees can give their best and they also know when to stop pushing. If you wish to be a great leader, make sure you steer clear of everything that great leaders steered clear of.
