Why Businesses Fail
Search the web for “FTI Failure To Implement” and the results will give a worldwide range of sites ranging from small businesses to the government. It is “the number one reason businesses struggle and fail”.
Change is hard, but implementing change is even harder because of fear. What happens if it doesn’t work? Will I have employee buy-in? What if I lose the customers that I currently have? What happens if I lose respect? How hard will it be to go back to the old way if this doesn’t work? Is it worth the risk?
“What happens if I don’t implement these changes?”
Have you ever inquired about a process and the answer was, “We’ve always done it that way”? That is a common response, but a terrible answer. Why were you asking about the process in the first place? It was because an aspect of the process stood out and raised a “red flag”. Does that mean that you have to implement immediate change to the process or your business will fail? No, but it’s a good place to start. Change is hard; it takes time and a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be cloaked in fear.
Telling someone to not fear consequences is ridiculous. They’re called consequences for a reason. Those fears are what cause FTI to happen in the first place, but what if we were to replace “consequences” with “reward”, and “fear” with “courage”?
Let’s rewrite our “change is hard” paragraph from above…
Change is hard, but implementing change comes with reward. Are we ready for the positive impact that this change is going to make? What if I have too much employee buy-in and everyone wants to help drive change? Can we reasonably accommodate our current customer base plus all of the new customers that this implementation is going to bring? What other changes can I implement with my new level of respect and influence? How did we ever survive doing it the old way? What was I afraid of?
