“Everybody is online these days.” We’ve been hearing that for years, but as technology develops, that statement becomes even more true.
The other day I overheard a conversation between some men. One of them was heading home to Nigeria for two months. He had been living in the U.S. for the last ten years, and he tries to make it home to visit his family every other year.
One of the men asked him if he was going to miss Wi-Fi while on his trip home. The Nigerian gentleman explained to him that not all of Africa is what we see on TV, and that they had Wi-Fi, American television, and they love watching YouTube videos online.
What is the point of that story?
To demonstrate that people really are connected globally.
The fact is, you need to have an online presence to be successful in the 21st century, but having an online presence doesn’t guarantee success. You still have to work for it. With 34,000,000 businesses in the U.S. alone, there is a lot of competition.
Every day there are over 3,000,000,000 people online worldwide, and at the heart of this computer generated world is social media. The question is not, “should I use social media?” That is the wrong question because your customers and competitors are using social media, and have been for years.
The right question is, how do I use social media effectively to stand out among my competition?
Five years ago Facebook was great for business; today it is oversaturated with people’s lives. Information gets lost in newsfeeds and pictures within its 1,000,000,000+ subscribers, but it is still a good tool if you know how to use it.
Twitter is a great way to keep your customers current on what is happening, but again you have to work hard to stand out from its 320,000,000 active users.
LinkedIn, with it’s with 400,000,000 users, is a must for companies and business professionals.
That is just three of the hundreds of sites globally that fall into the realm of social media, and I want these numbers to both scare and excite you at the same time. Scare you into the fact that social media is not a fad, and that if you are not using it effectively (or at all) you are losing business to someone else; however, those numbers should also be exciting because there are millions of customers waiting to find you.
It is hard to imagine that 1/3 of the online population is on Facebook, and that is just one social media platform. So the question remains, what are you going to do with this information?
Are you going to use social media as a tool and tap into millions of potential customers, or are you still waiting for this “social media thing” to blow over?
It does not matter if your business is local, domestic, or international; using social media can keep you connected with your current customers, and help grow your business by attracting new ones.
People are literally a click away. Help them find you.
