Stop Motivating and Start Inspiring

People are intrinsically motivated and externally inspired. Motivation in the workplace stems from the need for people to financially support their lifestyle and a feeling that they are making a difference, therefore pushing motivation is not a sustainable approach to leadership. Instead leaders should focus on inspiring people for a lasting and more productive approach.
5 Keys to Inspiring Your Workforce:
Influence. Consistent and deliberate efforts to understand and effectively connect with an audience. People don’t always have to agree with you, they merely need to clearly understand the goal and the “why” behind the mission.
Intentional Listening. Listen on purpose, with focus and intent. Active listening requires a desire to hear what the person is saying without preconceived judgement or interruption.
Facilitate. Make it easier by providing the resources and solutions the team needs to meet and exceed expectations.
Ask the Right Questions. Recognize that you do not have all the answers. Ask questions of those around you to find the answers and formulate as a team the best approach.
Make a Difference. You must also reflect through the balance of listening and action the internal motivation and external desire to make a difference. If others do not see it in you, how can they model this in their own performance?
Employers can offer fancy perks and incentives, however these things are less powerful motivators than responsibility, working challenges, and the feeling of being a valuable part of a quality team that comes from inspiring employees. Motivation requires an individual to push themselves to do something they don’t really care about. Inspired people are more confident, dedicated, and will go above and beyond to ensure the team’s goals are met.
