We have all heard the sayings “an idea is just a dream until you write it down, then it is a goal”, “the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are the hardest to see and talk about”. So, we write down our ideas and talk about them. After some time has passed, we realize that we got lost in the day to day routines at the office and would rather wait it out to see what happens instead of taking control of the goal and guiding it. Here are the 7 (very) common mistakes you are making that are keeping you from your goal.
Your company is pursuing too many goals at once. You have long-term goals, short-term goals, and little goals in between. However, when it comes to setting and accomplishing business goals, there is such a thing as “too much”. If you have too many goals, you aren’t able to focus on any one at a time and are less likely to accomplish any of your goals. Keep it simple. Have one long-term goal, two short-term goals, and if you have a management team, a maximum of two goals per segment of business at any given time.
You are setting unachievable or unrealistic goals for your business. This does not mean that you cannot set lofty or ambitious goals for your company, but do so within reason. If your big goal is way out there, set up smaller goals to get you closer to the big goal. Set goals that you honestly believe your company can accomplish and that you value most.
You only dream about the outcome. If you only focus on the end result, you will miss all the opportunities to learn and improve your goal. Part of accomplishing a goal is the journey you and your business takes to get there.
Your company focuses too much on the past. “This is how we have always done it”. As you are well aware, the world around us is changing at an ever increasing speed. That means, what worked for you then may not be the best now. These improvements can be discovered by being open minded to the opportunities and not focusing on why it is the way it is now.
You cultivate negativity instead of positivity. Accomplishing goals is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. If you believe in the goals and can cultivate a positive environment, others around you will respond similarly. When the entire organization is in tune, amazing things can happen.
Your organization keeps doing the same things over and over again. Change is the only constant. You may be working very hard and getting nowhere. Ask yourself, are you getting the results you desire? Reaching your goals is about testing, trying, adapting, and changing until you find the best way for your company.
You don’t create an action plan for your goals. Unless you create and follow through with an action plan, you will end up in the same situation time and time again. To move beyond this, create an action plan with mini-milestones that take your organization forward on the journey towards the end goal. A goal without a plan is just a wish.
