Spark Your Inner Genius - At Work
The office environment isn't always conducive to facilitating your genius mode, yet your genius mode is often required in decision making and strategy development throughout the day. Typical methods of sparking genius is done through meetings, often with too many people or without the presence of a goal, or by studying and analyzing stacks of data. We have learned through educational environments that everyone learns differently, so why is it that everyone is expected to tap into their inner genius the same way? I would like to debunk this methodology and inspire you to discover the mode that works best for you to access your inner genius.
When I refer to your inner genius or genius mode, I am referring to that creative space in your mind that opens the box and allows you to drift off and freely think about many possibilities, even if they are not feasible or are ridiculous. Sometimes those ridiculous ideas turn into something great and make you or your company more unique.
We all have something that we do or emerge ourselves in that brings out these free flowing ideas or moments of intellectual analysis. You may have multiple activities or environments that permit this ability. Let's start by identifying these.For me, it is being in a serene place with little distraction from other people and gardening. Yours could be similar to mine or anything that you enjoy doing that allows you to reflect, dream, think, and process. Maybe this is riding a bicycle, hiking, playing a strategic game, writing, or working on something that requires more physical effort than mental effort. Whatever it is, identify it and think about what characteristics of this activity bring out your genius mode.
Now that you have identified your unique genius mode accelerant, you will need to find ways of incorporating this into your workplace. Whether it is having a lone chair turned towards the windows of your office with a couple of plants in view or it is making time for a walk before or after a meeting, find ways to bring these elements into your work routine. Notice I say elements. It is crucial to not go overboard to the point where your co-workers are distracted. Be simple, but effective.
I can already hear rumblings from those that believe in separating your work-self from your real-self and carrying on different personalities throughout the day. Because we spend so much time as our work-self, but enjoy our real-self better, bringing the two into alignment represents your true self and facilitates your ability to bask in your genious mode when needed. Critics of the true-self mentality believe that you must be the workplace drone in order to succeed and can then lead the life you desire outside of the workplace. Typically we are trained to be this way. Although I understand and have lived this mentality, let me tell you that throwing your two personalities out of the window actually promotes growth and relationships - which is how you truly advance your career.
When an employee or other visitor would have a discussion in my office, they might notice my plants and ask a question or make a comment about them. I then had the opportunity to share all I knew and why I enjoy them so much. They would then relate by sharing a story of their own. I had the opportunity to teach them something new and to relate to them by showing my true-self. You, too, will have the same opportunities. These relational conversations build trust, loyalty, and open extraordinary opportunities in the business relationship. I can't tell you how many times I was able to secure a deal with another company when others had tried and failed, only due to my relationship. You, too, will have these opportunities after combining your two personalities.
Do not be afraid to bring elements of what sparks your inner genius into your workplace or your work routines. If it truly inspires your ability to creatively think, analyze, and make decisions then it benefits you and your company.
